“Do I have to change the carpet in my apartment after living there for over five years?”

Platinum Realty answers…

It depends.

Five years is a considerable amount of time.

First, check your lease agreement for what you agreed to by way of a signed lease agreement five years ago.  you may not have looked at that document since that day; but, there may be a clause referencing carpet/flooring within the unit.

If there is no specific clause relating to the carpet, then the responsibility for any replacement will be best decided between you and your landlord.

Was the carpet new when you moved in?  Wass the carpet damaged during your term of tenancy?  Is its condition the result of normal wear and tear?  The answers to these questions will help to determine who is responsible for the repair or replacement of the carpet.
